The Avenue of the Giants Marathon has been a marathon runner’s gem on the Redwood Coast for more than 42 years. Runners from all over the country gather on the first Sunday of May to run one of the most beautiful marathons in the world, which also includes a half-marathon and 10k. Surrounded by giant redwoods, runners at the Avenue of the Giants Marathon enjoy a breath of fresh air and one-of-a-kind scenery.
In 1972, the running scene in Humboldt County was just starting to boom. Humboldt State University recruited a number of outstanding runners while the Six Rivers Running Club had recently commenced and was creating a series of races for its members. Given that a number of local runners were seeking a marathon that would qualify them for the 1972 US Olympic Trials in addition to a competitive local marathon, the Avenue of the Giants Marathon was born in May 1972. They chose the area in Humboldt Redwoods State Park as it was relatively flat, with a few interesting hills; the scenery was unsurpassable; and traffic control would be no problem. Today the marathon has been noted by Runner’s World Magazine as being one of the most scenic courses in the country. The paved course winds through giant old-growth redwoods and follows the gorgeous Eel River, making it the perfect stage for a personal victory.
